Every salaried person in Bangladesh pays income tax on a slab system, and every employer has to deduct part of it before the salary is even paid. If you work in HR or finance, the important part isn’t memorizing this year’s exact numbers. It’s understanding how the whole thing works, because the numbers change every year anyway.
How salary tax actually works
Bangladesh’s tax year follows the July to June fiscal year. Salaried employees pay tax on a slab system. There’s a tax free amount first, then higher rates kick in as income goes up. The National Board of Revenue, or NBR, updates these numbers almost every year in the Finance Act. So a number that was true two years ago might be wrong today.
The one thing that never changes: always check this year’s numbers directly on nbr.gov.bd or ask a tax professional before you file or run payroll. Using last year’s numbers is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in Bangladesh payroll.
What actually counts as salary for tax purposes
Taxable salary usually means basic pay plus allowances like house rent, medical, and conveyance. Some of these allowances are partly tax free up to a certain limit, and the exact limit can change year to year. Getting the split right between basic pay and allowances on a payslip isn’t just a formality. It changes how much tax is actually owed.
Tax deducted at source, or TDS
Employers in Bangladesh have to deduct income tax from salaries before paying them out, then send that money to the government and report it. This isn’t something you can leave for the employee to handle at year end. If it’s missed or done wrong, it’s the company that’s exposed, not just the individual.
Getting a tax rebate through investments
Bangladesh gives a tax rebate for money put into certain approved places. Things like provident fund contributions, some savings certificates, and life insurance premiums. This lowers the tax you owe, not the income you’re taxed on, and there’s a cap based on your income or a fixed limit, depending on the year. Companies that explain this to employees early tend to get far fewer confused questions in December.
Filing your return
Every individual taxpayer files a return once a year, usually a few months after the fiscal year ends, though NBR sometimes pushes the deadline back. More people are filing online now through the e-Return system, which is usually faster than paper for anyone with a simple salary.
Where this breaks down as a company grows
With a handful of employees, you can track TDS and payslips by hand. Past a certain size, doing tax math manually becomes a real source of payroll mistakes, especially when different roles have different allowances, or when the slabs change and someone forgets to update every single employee’s spreadsheet.
This is the kind of thing Utso is built to handle automatically inside payroll. TDS, allowances, and deductions calculated the same correct way for every employee, every single pay run, instead of hoping one spreadsheet stays right all year.
One more thing
This article explains how salary tax works in Bangladesh. On purpose, it does not list this year’s exact tax free amount or slab percentages, because those change with every Finance Act, and giving you an old number with confidence would do more harm than good. Always check current numbers with NBR or a tax professional before acting on them.
